Travellers staying in Hurghada often ask whether they really need to bring their passport for a trip to Cairo, or whether leaving it in the hotel safe is fine. This guide answers that plainly, separately for travelling by domestic flight and by road, and also covers hotel pickup, children, and whether a copy is enough.

Passport and ID Requirements for Hurghada to Cairo
A domestic journey inside Egypt does not involve border or immigration procedures. What it does involve is proof of who you are. For domestic flights, what you need is a valid photo ID; Egyptian residents can use their national ID card, but a visiting tourist typically has only their passport, which is why it is the document everyone brings. Some airlines are stricter than others about exactly what they accept, so treat the passport as the safe default rather than assuming a lesser document will be enough.
Separately, remember that your passport needs to have been valid for at least six months from your date of entry into Egypt in the first place, with at least one blank page for the entry stamp. That is an entry requirement rather than a Hurghada-to-Cairo one, but it is worth checking before you fly to Egypt at all.
Domestic Flight vs Road: What Changes?
In short: for a flight the passport is effectively mandatory; for a road trip it is strongly recommended. Either way, carrying it costs you nothing and leaving it behind can cost you the day.
Hotel Pickup and Your Passport
Pickup from your hotel does not by itself require you to show your passport to the driver. The practical issue is different: many Hurghada hotels hold guests’ passports at reception during check-in, or ask to scan them, and you may be asked to reclaim yours. If your hotel keeps your passport, ask for it back the evening before a Cairo trip rather than early on the morning of departure, when reception may be quiet or changing shifts. If you’d rather not travel with the original, ask the hotel whether they can return it for the day and take it back on your return.
Travelling With Children
Children generally need their own identification just as adults do, and for a foreign child that means their own passport. Do not assume a child listed on a parent’s document, or a birth certificate on its own, will be accepted for a domestic flight; requirements vary by airline, so confirm with your carrier when you book. If your children are on the trip, check that each child’s passport is with the group before you leave the hotel, and that names match the booking exactly, just as they must for adults.
Are Copies Enough?
Copies are useful as a backup, not a substitute. Photograph or photocopy your passport’s photo page and keep that separately from the original, and store a digital copy in your email or phone as well. If your original were ever lost or stolen, a copy makes reporting and replacing it far easier. But for a flight, airline staff will want the physical passport, and for any official identification check the original is the safe thing to have. A copy will not reliably replace it.
Quick Checklist Before You Go
Physical passport in your day bag, not left in the hotel safe.
Names matching your booking exactly, for every adult and child.
A separate photo or copy of the passport photo page, kept apart from the original.
Passports for all children travelling with you.
Your passport retrieved from reception the evening before if the hotel is holding it.
